MPI Toronto Chapter On April 16, 2018

GMID Toronto Chapter event was a smashing success! With more than 160 attendees present including 70 participants at Connect Up, a peer to peer learning opportunity at the conclusion of the morning program. The event celebrated the business meetings industry at the new Globe and Mail Centre in downtown Toronto. 

The morning commenced with a Land Recognition Ceremony by the emcee, Nova Browning Rutherford, Mindfulness Facilitator & Wellness Expert on CTV's The Social. As well as a moment of silence to acknowledge the recent tragedy involving the Humboldt Broncos hockey team from Humboldt, Saskatchewan.

The day was also recognized by letter of support from all levels of government including: Mayor John Tory, Premier Kathleen Wynne and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. There acknowledgement exhibits an essential step in ensuring that the government begin to understand how meetings foster strong relationships, drive positive outcomes and support vibrant communities.

The Influence Award was bestowed to Johanne Bélanger, President & CEO, Tourism Toronto. The award is designed to recognize people or organizations outside the direct industry which have supported the development of meetings and conventions or the development of policy and programs impacting the industry. 

The all-star line up of Protalk speakers covered the headline news in the event industry. 

J.D. Killeen CPP, Director, National & Regional Sales, G4S Secure Solutions (Canada) Ltd. presentation, Is Your Event Plan Ready For A Crisis showed us how crisis management preparation can make a critical difference in the event of a catastrophic emergency.

A monthly columnist for the Financial Post and a tech commentator on CTV News, marketer & tech expert, Erin Bury’s presentation, How to harness the latest digital trends? What is the impact on your events? reviewed the digital landscape, how it’s changing in 2018, and advised us on how to be ready for what’s next. 

Social impact champion & #RealTalk Columnist, Courtney Stanley presented, Sexual Harassment in the Meetings Industry and shared her insights on how meeting professionals have the power to prevent sexual harassment from happening within the events industry & be influential against this misconduct on a global scale.

The morning concluded with a panel presentation that was broadcast live and later rebroadcasted at 2:00 pm ET on the MPI Global Meetings Industry Day Virtual Event. The panel titled Experiencing Transformation: Innovative Approaches in Business Events, was moderated by Vincent Murphy, Vice President of BizBash Canada, and comprised of a panel of experts including; Julian Sleath, CEO, Bentway, Charles Khabouth, CEO, Ink Entertainment, Beth Potter, President & CEO - Tourism Industry Association of Ontario, and Heidi Welker, Chair, Meetings Mean Business Canada & Senior VP, Business Development & Industry Partnerships, Freeman Audio Visual Canada.
